City of Durham issued the following announcement on Sept. 13.
Durham City Council is considering redistricting to help maintain population balance among the city’s three wards.
In 2022, City Council will consider redistricting to help maintain population balance among the City’s three wards.
Federal and state law requires the City to redistrict every ten years following the U.S. census if the data shows that the wards are not substantially equal in population.
The Ward System
City Council has 7 members: 3 representing specific wards, 3 at-large, and the Mayor. Council members elected to represent a specific ward must live in that ward to provide representation from different areas of the city. However, these candidates are elected by all city voters, and wards do not affect where a resident votes or which candidate(s) a resident can vote for.
