City of Kinston Police Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 16.

An in-training position for individuals that have not completed training and academic requirements established by the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards.  Will perform under direct supervision of a Police Sergeant or higher ranking Officer.  Performs applicable duties associated with training guidelines set by the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards’ Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (B.L.E.T.).

Essential Functions

Ability to performs tasks and assignments as required by the Training Academy.

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Must possess a high school diploma/G.E.D.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be 20 years of age by end of Basic Law Enforcement Training classes.
  • Must have a minimum knowledge of police laws and enforcement.
  • Must possess good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess good general math skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish effective relationships with the public and associates.
  • Must possess the ability to adapt to changing situations quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions.      

Physical Demands

Criteria for Basic Law Enforcement Certification:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • Must give written consent to a thorough background investigation.        
  • Must give written consent for fingerprinting and have a search made by this agency of:  local, state, and national records to disclose any past criminal history.
  • Must be examined and certified by a physician to meet physical requirements of a Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Must consent to a drug screen meeting the requirements of Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs with negative results.
  • Must consent to a psychological examination and be determined to properly fulfill the requirements of a Law Enforcement Officer’s mental and emotional suitability.
  • Must meet the  requirements of firearms training as prescribed for Law Enforcement.
