County of Wayne issued the following announcement on March 23.

Yesterday, the Board of Commissioners held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new detention center being constructed in Goldsboro!

This new facility will be located on the same property as the Carey A. Winders Detention Annex and will replace the current detention center located at the Wayne County Courthouse. Our existing jail was built in 1994.

Even with regular maintenance, these facilities go through a lot in housing incarcerated individuals.

Utilities in the existing jail have reached a point where regular maintenance is not economically feasible long term.

The new facility will cost less money to maintain and provide a better environment for employees working inside the facility and those incarcerated.+6
