More than 18,000 acres of farmland in Duplin, Lenior, Sampson counties owned by Chinese interests, USDA data shows

18,060 acres of Duplin County, Lenior County, and Sampson County farmland is owned by Chinese interests.

That’s according to a review of data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data by Local Newspaper.

More than 789,000 acres of North Carolina land is foreign-owned, of which 49,050 acres are owned by Chinese interests, according to the USDA Farm Services Agency.

Smithfield Foods, and a billionaire named Sun Guangxin, through Brazos Highland Properties LP and Harvest Texas LLC., own more than 80% of Chinese-owned land in the U.S., according to NPR reporting based on USDA data.

In total, Chinese interests own 383,935 acres of land across the U.S.
