The unexpected surge of hostilities between Israel and a Palestinian militant organization this week has caught the attention of many geopolitical analysts, sparking widespread speculation about when and how the conflict might be resolved. The conflict escalated after terrorist militant groups aligned with Hamas asserted that Israel should be “wiped from the face of the Earth”, in a direct affront to any hope for peaceful coexistence.

Israeli military forces have reportedly amassed near the Gaza border, as they seem to be preparing for a ground operation in Gaza. This development was reported by CNBC following an unprecedented attack on Israel over the weekend. The already beleaguered region is currently under blockade, resulting in severe disruptions to essential services including water, electricity, fuel and food supplies for its 2.3 million residents who are significantly disadvantaged. Middle East experts warn that this conflict is teetering on the brink of entering an even more destructive phase, leaving uncertainty about its ultimate outcome. There is considerable pessimism about swift de-escalation possibilities given that civilian populations are expected to bear much of the conflict’s impact.

The Washington Institute urged a reassessment of common analytical frameworks in light of this brutal assault and Hezbollah’s increasing activities along Israel’s northern border. As noted by them on Oct. 6th, this attack from Hamas definitely received strategic support from Iran and Hezbollah, which negates previous assumptions that Hamas had been distracted by local governance responsibilities. It was thought they had been effectively deterred by Israel’s military readiness and political considerations such as economic incentives like employment opportunities for Gazan workers in Israel, Qatari salary funding and resource inflows intended to maintain peace.

The Council on Foreign Relations reports that Hamas emerged from the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood towards the end of 1980s; it took control over Gaza Strip after winning against its rival political party Fatah in 2006 elections. However, due to their armed resistance against Israel through tactics like suicide bombings and rocket attacks, both the United States and the European Union have labeled Hamas as a terrorist organization. The group’s unexpected assault on the southern part of Israel in 2023 was the deadliest in history, prompting Israel to declare war against them.
