Sampson Regional Medical Center will celebrate its 75th anniversary this fall, marking a significant milestone in its service to Sampson County and the surrounding region. The hospital announced that it will host a 75th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. on the front lawn of the facility. Community members are invited to join in commemorating the hospital’s history and ongoing role in local healthcare.

The medical center was originally established in 1950 as Sampson County Memorial Hospital. It was founded by local leaders who wanted to ensure access to healthcare close to home. Since opening its doors, nearly 40,000 babies have been delivered at the hospital.

Over time, Sampson Regional Medical Center has expanded its services and facilities. Developments include the expansion of surgical suites in the 1970s and the establishment of specialty clinics in the 1990s. Today, the hospital offers advanced diagnostic and outpatient services.

“Seventy-five years ago, our community made an investment in itself by building this hospital,” said Dr. Shawn Howerton, Chief Executive & Chief Medical Officer of Sampson Regional Medical Center. “From the first patient admitted in 1950 to the thousands we care for each year today, this hospital has always been about one thing: serving people with compassion, excellence, and dedication. This anniversary gives us a chance to reflect on the legacy and say thank you to the many individuals who have made it possible.”

The upcoming celebration will feature remarks from both hospital and community leaders as well as historical displays highlighting key moments from the institution’s history.

“We are proud of our history, but we are also excited about the future,” Howerton added. “Healthcare is always evolving, and as we look ahead, we remain committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care right here at home. The next 75 years are just as important as the first.”

The public is encouraged to attend this event recognizing Sampson Regional Medical Center’s contributions over seven decades. More information about the hospital’s history can be found at www.SampsonRMC.org/75thAnniversary.
