State Sen. Jim Perry (R-Kinston) is encouraging his constituents to donate to his campaign to combat money from outside of North Carolina that he alleges accounts for the majority of fundraising by his opposition.

In a July 23 post to his Facebook Page, Perry drew attention to his claims that “dark money” groups are pouring funds into North Carolina to attempt to tip the scales in the coming election in favor of their views.

“Our opposition collected thousands of donations last month,” Perry said in the Facebook post. “Public documents indicate less than 9% of the donors are from North Carolina.”

The photo Perry shared to accompany his post states that “In reality, they are not coming after us, they are coming after you — we are just standing in their way,” and includes campaign logos of Republican House Majority Leader John Bell (R-Johnston) and state Rep. Chris Humphrey (R-Kinston) alongside Perry’s.

“If you don't want New York and California taxes and regulation in North Carolina, please share with your friends,” Perry’s post said.

As of July 10, Ballotpedia reported that Perry has raised more than $2 million for his campaign. His Democratic challenger, Donna Lake, has raised almost $170,000
