City of Kinston issued the following announcement on Nov. 19.
You and your family are invited to join with us as we celebrate the 70th Anniversary of our school’s Walkout that took place November 20, 1951. Please stand with us as we dedicate a Roadside Marker that will forever be a reminder to this nation at large that this audacious event occurred so many years ago. The Walkout has great historical significance for our country and has therefore been included in the Civil Rights Project of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The North Carolina African American Historical Commission recognized the Walkout under the NC Civil Rights Marker Trail. Also, the City of Kinston commissioned local artists to depict the Walkout as part of the Downtown Kinston Mural Program. We are very proud of these honors.
In addition to the dedication of a Marker, we are applying our efforts towards the rehabilitation of our school building that we know will continue to provide the community with space for gatherings, meetings and other social and/or civic needs. Erected in 1953 as a result of the Walkout, we believe this facility can become a beacon for the community if we can obtain the assistance and support we need so badly.
The dedication will take place at 611 E. Washington Avenue (the corner of E. Washington Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard) in Kinston on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 11 a.m.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at the dedication. We hope you will be inspired to assist us as we experience the challenges ahead of us. Our overall goals are to remain viable and leave a historical legacy for our Kinston, NC community.
