Wayne County Public Schools issued the following announcement on Mar. 29.
Fremont Elementary students successfully put their reading skills to the test by winning the Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) Elementary Battle of the Books competition. The competition took place on Friday, March 25, at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center with approximately 80 students from 10 schools competing.
“The past two years have been especially challenging, and I am so proud of all of the students and coaches who have spent much of this school year training for Friday’s competition,” states Christy White, Title IV Enrichment Facilitator. “Last year, only two schools were able to compete due to logistical challenges caused by the pandemic (Fremont Elementary and Northeast Elementary). I am so pleased that we were able to return to a more traditional format this year. We congratulate the Fremont Elementary team for their success and wish the team the very best as it moves on to the regional competition.”
The Elementary School Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl style competition that encourages reading. Contestants, who are in grades 4-5, must read 15 books chosen by a statewide committee, and the competition tests students’ comprehension of the books.
Later in April, the Fremont Elementary team will compete against other North Carolina Region 2 elementary school teams that won their district competitions. It has not determined where the competition will be held, and whether it will be in-person or conducted virtually.
The Fremont Elementary Battle of the Books Team consists of Zachary Britt, Maddie Brown-Reeves, Allyssa Derksen, Jaxon McDonald, Makena Radford, and Lawrence Woodhouse. The team is coached by Tammy Derksen (Head Coach) and Tobie Girard (Assistant Coach).
The Battle of the Books program is coordinated by the Media Center program at participating schools. Organizers state that the Battle of the Books competition is a great way to motivate students to read and be exposed to quality literature.
Rosewood Elementary took second place. Their team consists of Tristan Hill, Greyson Allen, Victoria Murphey, Steven Ash, Dakari Harper-Nicholson, Addison Baker, Lucas Wilson, Benjamin Baynes, Asher Sheltrown. The team is coached by Lori Jones (Head Coach) and Dana Gurley (Assistant Coach).
Northeast Elementary took third place. Their team consists of Natalie Smith, Athena Rawson, Daniel Miramon-Antonio, Gemma Ponce-Soria, and Jonathan Gardner. The team is coached by Stacy Hersey.
The other schools that participated in the competition include: Carver Primary, Carver Heights Elementary, Eastern Wayne Elementary, Grantham Middle, Mount Olive Middle, Northwest Elementary, and Spring Creek Middle.
