County of Wayne issued the following announcement on Dec. 25.
Due to extreme cold weather causing increased demand and a shortage of available power in the Southeast region, we were forced to interrupt service to about 500,000 customers to maintain the energy grid and prevent further disruptions. Power is currently being restored from today’s curtailment and should be completed today.
Bringing many customers back online during extremely cold temperatures can add stress to the system, so we needed to be methodical in how we were going about the curtailments. We understand this created uncertainty throughout the day.
We very much appreciate the patience and support from you and our customers today, knowing it is an important holiday time in addition to extreme weather conditions. We continue to ask for energy conservation during the extreme cold temperatures to help avoid rotating outages in the early morning hours of Christmas Day.
We’re also working this afternoon to restore about 40,000 customers who experienced outages from a high-wind event on Friday. We’re communicating directly with those customers to let them know when they can expect service to be restored.
