The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced May 1 that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Carlos Bran-Calderon, a Salvadoran national convicted of second-degree murder in Wayne County, North Carolina.

Bran-Calderon was included in a DHS announcement about ICE arrests involving individuals charged with or convicted of serious crimes. DHS said nearly 70 percent of ICE arrests involve noncitizens who are charged with or convicted of crimes in the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Wayne County deputies found the body of 32-year-old Edwin Alexander Sura-Cruz at a residence outside Mount Olive on Nov. 5, 2011, after responding to an assault report. Investigators identified Carlos Antonio Bran Calderon, then 23, of Dudley, as the suspect, according to WRAL.

Calderon was arrested later that morning, charged with murder, and held without bond in the Wayne County Detention Center, according to WRAL.

The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, and emergency response. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a DHS component agency that carries out immigration enforcement and removal operations, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
