Wayne County Public Schools issued the following announcement on Aug. 18.
Charles B. Aycock High agricultural education teacher and FFA Advisor, Karen Cox, recently learned that she was named the 2020 Southeast Region recipient of the Honorary State FFA Degree. The honor is awarded to a maximum of six agricultural education teachers across the state (one per region) annually. It is the highest honorary degree awarded by the North Carolina FFA Association.
Beverly Boltinhouse, WCPS Director of Career & Technical Education, states that Mrs. Cox is very deserving of this award.
“Karen is a leader whose hard work and achievements in the classroom is evident by the impact and inspiration she has had on students and teacher interns, some of whom are now Ag teachers in our district,” adds Mrs. Boltinhouse. “She is a team player who regularly works with our department and her colleagues to help improve Ag programs district-wide. She also collaborates with the community on SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experiences) projects, grants, and work study programs.”
Mrs. Cox has been at CBA High for 24 years. During this time, she has worked to engage students in the field of agriculture, guiding students in competitions at the federation, regional, state, and national level. Most recently, CBA High’s FFA students Luke West, Levi Lanier, Trent Weaver, and Rudy Sasser won first place in the state Agricultural Mechanics Virtual Career Development event held last spring. Under her leadership, these FFA students are now preparing for the national competition event.
Mrs. Cox will be presented the award at the 93rd North Carolina State FFA Convention in June 2022
