Kinston started the year with two homicides and two attacks, but with the stay-at-home order in place, the crime rate has decreased.
“The crime rate for all Type 1 crimes is down which includes: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. Arson is also included in Type 1 crimes, however, that is up to two arsons during March and April compared to one this time last year,” Kinston Police Department Maj. Jenee Spencer told Kinston.com. “But overall, crime is down 26% since the coronavirus alert compared to last year at this time."
In 2019, there were 357 crimes between March 14 and April 9, according to Kinston.com. That same time frame for this year has seen 286 crimes, Kinston.com reports.
"In my 27 years with the Kinston Police Department, I have seen a rise and fall with the crime rate. It is at one of the lowest levels I have ever seen," Spencer told Kinston.com. “I think it is safe to say this is largely due to Gov. [Roy] Cooper’s order and more people staying at home, therefore not becoming victims of crimes or out perpetrating them. People seem to be more hesitant to closely interact with others, which adds an extra level of protection.”
